Where to Stay in Carpignano Salentino: A Local's Guide

Carpignano Salentino is not a place you pass through: it's a village of two thousand people in the heart of the Grecìa Salentina, home to one of the most important Byzantine sites in southern Italy, with a location that's worth its weight in gold — twenty minutes from Otranto, half an hour from Lecce, the Alimini beaches fifteen minutes away. If you're looking for somewhere to stay here, this guide is written by people who live and work in Carpignano.

Why stay in Carpignano itself

The logic is simple: inland villages cost less than the coast, and in summer they're easier to live in — no traffic, parking outside your door, dinner in the piazza among locals in the evening. From Carpignano you can reach the Adriatic (Torre dell'Orso, Alimini, Otranto) in fifteen minutes, and the villages of the Grecìa Salentina just as quickly: Martano, Calimera, Corigliano d'Otranto with its castle, Melpignano of the Notte della Taranta.

And then there's a reason locals take for granted: the crypt of Santa Cristina, carved into the rock, with the oldest dated Byzantine fresco in the Salento. It has been there since the 10th century, a short walk from the piazza.

Your options in the village

Carpignano is a small village: the accommodation on offer is mostly holiday homes in the old centre plus a few properties in the countryside. The right choice depends on how you travel:

  • A house in the village — for those who want to step out on foot in the evening. Watch out in the summer months: houses in the centre don't always have outdoor space.
  • A property in the countryside — for those after quiet, a garden and room to spread out, while staying two minutes by car from the piazza.

Ours: an 18th-century masseria on the edge of the village

We are Masseria Montanari, an old farmhouse in Lecce stone dating from the 1700s in the countryside around Carpignano: 6 independent units — rooms, studios with kitchenettes and apartments with full kitchens — for a total of 16 beds, each with its own entrance and its own space. See the rooms and apartments.

What to expect, honestly stated:

  • A large garden and outdoor living: pergolas, a wood-fired barbecue, shady corners. It's the place for people who want the grill and the stars in the evening, not entertainment programmes.
  • Proper self-catering: cook whenever you like; the village bakeries and grocery shops are two minutes away.
  • Groups and families: you can also rent the entire masseria, with the stone vaulted hall for dinners all together.
  • No pool: the sea is fifteen minutes away, and we tell you upfront.

How far everything is (by car)

  • Otranto: 20 minutes
  • Alimini lakes / beaches: 15 minutes
  • Torre dell'Orso: 15 minutes
  • Martano and Calimera: 5–10 minutes
  • Maglie: 10 minutes
  • Lecce: 30 minutes

When to come

April to October for the sea; but Carpignano is at its best off-season too — the village festivals and traditions, the countryside in November, the real pace of life. If you want to know more about picking the right time, we've written a guide on when to visit the Salento.
