How Much a 20-Guest Wedding in Puglia Really Costs
Anyone who starts planning a small wedding, twenty or thirty guests, soon discovers something odd: reception venues struggle to quote below a certain threshold, because their model was built for large numbers. The per-head price stays high, minimum spends kick in, and the intimate wedding ends up costing almost as much as a big one. This guide does the maths honestly: where the costs come from, how much each item weighs, and how the picture changes with a different model.
The traditional model: the per-head price
In Puglia a reception in a hall or a full-service masseria generally costs between 90 and 140 euros per head, often with a guaranteed minimum number of guests. The price includes everything, venue, menu, service, and for that very reason it cannot be broken down: the bill grows with the people, and for twenty guests you often pay for forty. On top of that come flowers, music, photographer, outfits, wedding favours and your guests' travel. It is not a flawed model: it was designed for the hundred-person wedding with table service, and in that format it works very well.
The rental model: pay for the space once, choose the rest yourselves
At Masseria Montanari the logic is reversed. You pay for the space once: the vaulted hall alone with the garden, indicatively from 150 euros for the day, or the whole masseria for exclusive use, accommodation included, from 500 to 800 euros per day depending on the season. Catering is your choice: you can bring the restaurant or caterer you trust, a private cook who does it well, or use the kitchen at your disposal. No minimum number of covers, no mark-up on food, no percentage.
Let's take a realistic example for 24 guests, with a weekend celebration in the whole masseria:

- Catering: up to you. Good Salento cooking served as a buffet or at one long table, from a local caterer, often comes in well below a reception hall's per-head price; wine from the area's producers costs a fraction of the list price.
- Celebrant for the symbolic ceremony: indicatively between 300 and 600 euros, unless you entrust it to a friend.
- Photographer, music, flowers: the same items as any wedding, but on a budget that makes them choices rather than sacrifices.
The result is that the whole wedding, including the night for everyone, costs as much as the reception alone in the traditional model. The difference is not about cutting quality, but about not paying for a format you don't need.
Where the money really goes
In the per-head model, a significant share of the price covers the service structure: floor staff, in-house kitchen, standard set-ups. That is fair for those who use them; for a table of twenty people among friends, it is often superfluous. In the rental model that money comes back into your hands, and you put it where you want: more refined catering, a live musician, the photographer you always wanted, or simply lower spending.
The value that doesn't show up in the sums
Then there is what a quote cannot measure: exclusive use, one event at a time, no other party in the hall next door. The garden with the olive trees for the symbolic ceremony. Guests who sleep ten metres from the party and have breakfast with you on Sunday. Time, with no shifts and no closing hours. For a small wedding, these are often the things that matter most.
