Reiki Is Not a Therapy: What It Can Offer, What It Cannot and When to Ask Your Doctor First

Two opposite stories circulate about reiki. The first presents it as a remedy for everything, from anxiety to back pain. The second dismisses it as mere suggestion. Neither helps those who would simply like to understand whether it is worth trying. This guide sits in the middle, which is the most honest place to be: it says what reiki can reasonably offer, what it must not promise, and how to recognise those who practise it seriously. It is also the way we offer it at the masseria, in Salento.

What the law says

In Italy reiki is not a medical profession. It belongs among the wellbeing disciplines carried out under Italian Law 4/2013 on non-regulated professions. In practice: those who practise it must state this on their materials, cannot make diagnoses, cannot prescribe anything, cannot suggest interrupting or changing any medical care. If a practitioner never mentions the law, or uses words like "therapy" and "recovery", she is stepping outside her boundaries.

What the research says

The available studies on reiki are numerous but largely small, and the systematic reviews all reach the same conclusion: there is no evidence that reiki resolves any illness. What the studies describe most consistently is an effect on perceived wellbeing: relaxation, reduced self-reported stress, a feeling of calm in the hours that follow. It is a modest, honest result, and it is not nothing: an hour in which someone looks after you, without hurry and without judgement, has a value that does not need inflating.

What it can reasonably offer

  • An hour of real quiet, away from screens, in which you do not have to do anything.
  • Deep relaxation, which many describe as warmth and drowsiness, and which often leaves better sleep in the days that follow.
  • A moment of respectful contact, for those going through a period in which they feel little seen.
  • An accompaniment, never an alternative, to medical or psychological care already under way, with the consent of those who follow you.

What it must not promise

Be wary of anyone who tells you that reiki "manages" anxiety, "dissolves" chronic pain, "rebalances" an organ, "clears" a block that would be stopping you from getting better. Be even more wary of anyone who suggests, even by allusion, postponing a medical appointment or reducing a medication. Reiki does none of this, and whoever claims it does is selling you an illusion, often at a high price.

When to speak to your doctor first

Reiki is a gentle practice: there are no manipulations, no pressure and no substances, and it has no absolute contraindications. There are, however, situations in which the right thing is to speak first to those responsible for your medical care: an illness in its acute phase, an oncology pathway, a high-risk pregnancy, a psychiatric condition under medical supervision. Not because reiki is dangerous, but because in those moments every choice should be shared with whoever holds clinical responsibility. A serious practitioner will ask you herself, before starting.

The three signs of a serious practitioner

  1. She asks how you are and whether you have any medical conditions, before the first session, and does so without turning it into an interrogation.
  2. She uses the right words: wellbeing, relaxation, practice; never remedy, therapy, recovery.
  3. She is transparent about cost, length and training, and does not offer you endless packages or "levels of purification" to buy.

Reiki at the masseria

At Masseria Montanari, in Carpignano Salentino, reiki is offered exactly like this: as a wellbeing practice, not a therapy, in the vaulted stone hall, with Valentina, fourth-level Reiki Master and astrology consultant we work with. No promises, an initial questionnaire, and the freedom to try it just once without commitment. It does not replace medical or psychological care. The first dates open in the coming months: on the Energy page you will find the form to be notified. Those who also want to work on the body through the breath will find breathwork with Davide at the masseria, with the same honesty about contraindications.
