Breath and the Nervous System: Why the Way You Breathe Changes How You Feel
Take a breath, now. Short, high in the chest, through the mouth. Now take another. Slow, through the nose, down to the belly. You have just spoken to your nervous system in two different languages.
We breathe around twenty thousand times a day without thinking about it. The breath is the only function of the body you can leave to run on its own or guide at will. That is why it is the most direct route to the nervous system. Understanding how it works helps you understand what breathwork does, and also what it cannot do.
The two gears
The autonomic nervous system has two branches. The sympathetic is the gear of action and alarm: it speeds up the heart, tenses the muscles, gets you ready to react. The parasympathetic is the gear of recovery: it slows down, digests, repairs, lets you sleep.
They are not enemies. They alternate all day long. The problem starts when the first one stays on for too long. And for many people today, that is the norm.
The switch you can reach
You cannot command the heart. Nor digestion, nor blood pressure. The breath, yes.
And the breath speaks to the nervous system in two directions. A short breath, high in the chest, mouth open, tells the body there is danger. A slow, nasal breath that goes down into the diaphragm tells it that it can lay down its arms. The vagus nerve, which connects the brain to the organs, listens above all to the long out-breath. That is why so many practices lengthen the exhale.
What changes when you breathe well
People who learn to breathe through the nose, slowly and with the diaphragm usually report four things. More calm in situations that used to unsettle them. More continuous sleep. Less tension in the shoulders and jaw. Steadier energy through the day.
These are effects on wellbeing that you can feel, consistent with what is known about the nervous system. They come with daily practice, not with one session.
What the intense practices do
Rebirthing and rhythmic breathing circles use the breath in the opposite direction. First they intensify it: the body enters an unusual state, control loosens, what is being held can come to the surface. Then they let it slow down, into a deep stillness.
That is the release so many people talk about. A tension held for years that the body, for once, lets go of. Precisely because they are intense, these practices have contraindications and should be done with someone who knows how to accompany you.
What I do not promise you
The breath is not a fix for anxiety. It does not make trauma go away. It does not replace medical or psychological care. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling an illusion.
What the breath can do is give the body an experience different from constant alarm. And give you a tool you always carry with you. For many people that is already a lot. If you are on a medical or psychological path, the breath can accompany it. Never take its place.
Where to start
From the simplest door: learning to breathe well every day. Then, if you want, the breathing circle, to feel the release in a group. And rebirthing, if you are looking for the deep passage.
At Masseria Montanari, in Salento, the three doors are in the same place. You are accompanied by Davide, breath coach and facilitator, who works with Masseria Montanari. In the stone vaulted hall, with the countryside around you and the time you need to come back slowly.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to feel a difference? With five minutes of slow breathing several times a day, many people notice more calm within one or two weeks. Sleep generally changes within a month.
Does it work in a moment of agitation too? Yes, and that is its most useful application. Six slow breaths with a long out-breath lower activation in a few minutes. They do not solve the cause, but they give you back some margin.
How is it different from meditation? Meditation works on attention, the breath on the body. They go well together: functional breathing makes meditation easier, and vice versa.
Book a session
You do not have to know where to start. Tell me how you are and what you are looking for on the Breath page: you do not need to write much. I will reply myself, usually within a day, and together we will work out which experience to start from. If you are coming from far away, you can stay the night at the masseria.
Breathing practices are experiences of wellbeing and awareness offered under Italian Law 4/2013: they are not a remedy for anything and do not replace medical or psychological care.
