Best Salento Beaches for Kids: Family-Friendly Shores
Anyone who travels with children knows it: not all beaches are created equal. You need sand to play on, water that stays shallow for a good while, and a seabed that slopes gently, with no sudden drop-offs. The good news is that Salento, on both of its coasts, is generous in exactly this way. Here are the beaches we recommend to families, all reachable on a day trip from the masseria.
What makes a beach good for kids
Before the destinations, the criteria. For a relaxed day with little ones we look for: sand (more comfortable and safer than rocks), a shallow, gently sloping seabed (children can stay in the water without danger), and ideally a bit of shade or the chance to rent an umbrella. Salento has two very different coasts, and both offer beaches like these.
On the Adriatic side (the closest)
Laghi Alimini, near Otranto — A long stretch of fine sand with a seabed that slopes gently: no surprise that it's a firm favourite with families. Behind it, the pine forest and the two lakes create a natural setting that's worth a visit even when you're out of the water.
Torre dell'Orso — A wide expanse of pale sand framed between two headlands, with the famous "Due Sorelle" sea stacks. A comfortable, well-equipped beach, perfect for a day with the family.
Both are about twenty to twenty-five minutes by car from the masseria.
On the Ionian side (the shallowest water)
Porto Cesareo and Punta Prosciutto — On the Ionian side the water is famous for staying shallow and clear for tens of metres, with white, almost Caribbean sand. This is a children's kingdom: you can wade out a long way without the water ever rising above the knee. The Ionian coast is a little further, but for a "seaside day with the little ones" it more than repays the journey.
Practical tips for families
- Go early. In high season the car parks near the best-known beaches fill up by mid-morning.
- Plan for shade. Between midday and 4 p.m. the Salento sun is fierce: umbrella, sun hats and breaks are a must.
- Mix the sea with the inland. A morning at the beach and a cooler afternoon among the villages is the perfect rhythm to keep children from tiring out.
The masseria as a family base
Having a peaceful base, with outdoor spaces where children can roam freely, makes all the difference. At the masseria the garden and the shared areas are designed with them in mind too, and the larger apartments are ideal for those travelling as a family: two rooms, a kitchen and space to play once you're back from the sea. The best way to enjoy Salento with little ones, stress-free.
