Natal Chart: What It Is, How to Read It and Why It Is Not a Horoscope
Perhaps the newspaper horoscope has always left you cold. Twelve sentences for twelve signs. None that sounds like you.
The natal chart is something else. It is a map of the sky calculated to the minute and to the kilometre, unique to you, which astrology has used for centuries to speak of character, tendencies and the seasons of life. Here I tell you what it is, how it is read and what to expect from the person who reads it with you.
What a natal chart is
The natal chart, or birth chart, is the photograph of the sky at the exact moment you were born, seen from the place where you were born. On a circle divided into twelve segments are marked the Sun, the Moon and the planets, the signs they were passing through and the angles they formed with one another.
Someone born a minute later, or in another city, has a different chart. This is what sets it apart from the horoscope, which speaks to one twelfth of humanity at a time.
The three pieces of data you need
Date, place and time of birth. The date and place you know. The time is the piece that makes the difference, because the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours and shifts the whole structure of the houses.
If you do not remember it, the exact time is written on your full birth certificate, which you request from the registry office of the town where you were born and which arrives in a few days. "Around seven" is not enough.
The parts of the chart
The planets are the "who". The Sun, identity. The Moon, emotions and needs. Mercury, the mind and the word. Venus, affections and values. Mars, energy and desire. Then Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which speak of slower, generational themes.
The signs are the "how": the style in which each planet expresses itself. A Mars in Aries and a Mars in Pisces want the same things in very different ways.
The houses are the "where": the twelve areas of life, identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, in which the planets act.
The aspects are the relationships: the angles between planets that say whether two energies work together, pull against each other or ignore each other.
Sun, Moon and Ascendant are the three points everyone quotes. They are a good start. But on their own they are like reading only the title of a book.
How it is really read
A natal chart is not read piece by piece, like a list of ingredients. It is read as a whole. You look for the themes that return, the tensions that repeat in different places, the resources that make up for the knots.
This is where a consultant differs from an app. Software calculates in a second. Putting the parts together into a story that sounds like you is a work of listening, not of calculation.

What it can give you, and what it cannot

What a serious consultation does not do: predict illness, promise money, tell you whom to marry or when to leave a job. Astrology is a symbolic and reflective tool, it does not provide predictions about health, money or life outcomes and does not replace medical or psychological care. Frequently asked questions
I do not know my exact time of birth: can I still do it? Better to recover it from your full birth certificate. Without it, the reading loses the Ascendant and the houses.
Does the natal chart tell the future? No. It is a symbolic tool for looking at your story from another perspective.
Do I have to believe in astrology? No. You can listen and see whether what emerges sounds like you.
