Natal Chart: What It Is, How to Read It and Why It Is Not a Horoscope
If the newspaper horoscope has always left you cold, you are in the right place. The natal chart is something else: not twelve sentences for twelve signs, but a map of the sky calculated to the minute and the kilometre, unique to each person, which astrology has used for centuries to speak about character, tendencies and the seasons of a life. This guide explains what it is, how it is read and what to expect from whoever reads it for you.
What a natal chart is
The natal chart (or birth chart, or chart of the heavens) is a photograph of the sky at the exact moment of your birth, seen from the place where you were born. On a circle divided into twelve segments are marked the positions of the Sun, the Moon and the planets, the zodiac signs they were passing through and the angles they formed with one another. Every person born in another minute or another city has a different chart: this is what sets it apart from the horoscope, which speaks to one twelfth of humanity at a time.
The three pieces of data you need
To calculate the chart you need date, place and time of birth. Everyone knows the date and the place; the time is the piece that makes the difference, because the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours and shifts the entire structure of the houses. If you do not remember it, the exact time is written on the full birth certificate (in Italy, the atto di nascita integrale), which can be requested from the municipality where you were born within a few days. Ask for that one: "around seven" is not enough.
The elements of the chart, in brief
- The planets are the "who": the Sun (identity), the Moon (emotions and needs), Mercury (mind and speech), Venus (affections and values), Mars (energy and desire), and then Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which tell of slower, generational themes.
- The signs are the "how": the style in which each planet expresses itself. A Mars in Aries and a Mars in Pisces want the same things in very different ways.
- The houses are the "where": the twelve areas of life (identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, and so on) in which the planets act.
- The aspects are the relationships: the angles between planets that say whether two energies collaborate, pull against each other or ignore one another.
The three points everyone quotes, Sun, Moon and Ascendant, are a good start, but on their own they are like reading only the title of a book.
How it is really read
A natal chart is not read piece by piece, like a list of ingredients. It is read as a whole: you look for the themes that return, the tensions that repeat in different places, the resources that make up for the knots. This is where the reading of an experienced consultant differs from the apps: software calculates in a second, but putting the parts together into a story that resembles you is a work of listening, not of calculation.
The approach we follow at the masseria is that of evolutionary and psychological astrology: the chart is not a verdict on who you are, but a portrait of tendencies, talents and open questions, to be used to understand yourself better and choose with more awareness.
What it can give and what it cannot
A good reading leaves you with a map: new words for things you have always felt, the meaning of some patterns that keep repeating, a clearer idea of the seasons you are going through. What a serious reading does not do: predict illness, promise money, tell you whom to marry or when to leave a job. Astrology is not a predictive science; it does not replace medical or psychological care, nor financial advice. Anyone offering you certainties is selling you fear.
The reading with Valentina
At Masseria Montanari, in Salento, astrology readings are led by Valentina, fourth-level Reiki Master and astrology consultant we work with. They last between 75 and 90 minutes and take place in person in the vaulted hall of the masseria, in Carpignano Salentino, or online by video call from any city. In both cases you receive the graphic of your chart. In person, the reading can become integrated with a reiki session: the reading shows where to look, reiki works where it is needed. The first dates open in the coming months: on the Energy page there is the form to be told first. And if you organise a retreat at the masseria, the reading can become a moment in the programme for the participants.
