Where to celebrate in Carpignano Salentino: a local's guide
Carpignano Salentino is a town that knows how to celebrate, and anyone who lives here has always known it. The Festa te lu Mieru, which has been filling the streets with wine and pittule at the start of September since 1975, is among the oldest and best-loved festivals in Salento (it was born, curious story, from the encounter between the town and Eugenio Barba's Odin Teatret). And all around, the calendar of the Grecìa Salentina never stops: patron saint feasts, food festivals, pizzica nights. But when the party is yours, a birthday, an anniversary, a family ceremony, the town square is not enough: you need a private space, with your own timing, your own music and your own people. The town's festivals (for inspiration, or to join in)
If you are after atmosphere, the calendar is generous: the Festa te lu Mieru on the first weekend of September, the patron saint feast, the festivals of the towns ten minutes away, Martano, Calimera, Zollino, Castrignano, and at the end of August the travelling festival of the Notte della Taranta, which culminates in the Concertone in Melpignano, a stone's throw from here. For an evening with friends this is often all you need: you eat standing up, you dance the pizzica, you spend little. Many of our guests build their whole weekend around a festival.
When you need a space of your own: the two models
For a private party in and around Carpignano there are essentially two paths, and it pays to know both:
1. The full-service reception. For big formal weddings the area is well equipped, with reception venues that take care of menu and service from A to Z, even for hundreds of guests. It is the right choice for large numbers: you pay a per-head price and think about nothing.
2. Renting the spaces with free choice of catering, our formula. At Masseria Montanari, a 1700s farmhouse on the edge of town, you rent the vaulted hall in Lecce stone (55 m², up to 35 seated, climate-controlled: the party happens all year round) and the garden, and you run the rest yourself: your trusted caterer or rotisserie, and around here rotisseries are an institution, the kitchen at your disposal for those who cook at home, the barbecue and the wood-fired oven, your own music and your own hours. You pay for the space once; the food budget is yours to decide. With 25 to 35 guests, the difference from a per-head price is visible to the naked eye.
Which parties the masseria works for
Parties on the scale of family and friends: birthdays, especially the milestone ones, christenings, first communions and confirmations, graduation parties (Lecce and the university are 25 minutes away), anniversaries and vow renewals, and the extended-family dinners that deserve more than a restaurant. The garden holds the aperitif and the children's games, the hall holds the long table, and if the weather turns, the party stays sheltered and warm anyway.
The advantage no restaurant can give you: you sleep on site
In Carpignano, guests always arrive from out of town too, from Lecce, from the coast, from the villages. Here nobody drives at night: 6 independent apartments, up to 16 sleeping places, and the party carries on at breakfast.
