Functional Breathing: What the Oxygen Advantage Method Teaches

There is a paradox at the heart of modern breathing: we breathe too much. Open mouths, fast rhythms, breaths high in the chest: the opposite of how the body is designed to work. Functional breathing is the discipline that restores order, and Patrick McKeown's Oxygen Advantage method, set out in his book "The Oxygen Advantage", is one of its most widespread and concrete approaches. Here is what it teaches, with no mysticism: it is applied physiology.

The core idea: breathe less, not more

The method's counter-intuitive insight is that many of us chronically over-breathe: too many litres of air per minute, through the mouth, with the chest. The method works to bring the breath back to its natural design:

  • Nasal, always: the nose filters, warms, humidifies and regulates the air; the mouth does not. Day, night and, progressively, even during exertion.
  • Slow and low: slower rhythms and diaphragmatic breathing, which switch on the body's calming response.
  • Light: smaller volumes of air, which the method also trains through exercises in tolerating the feeling of air "running short": pauses and controlled breath holds, gradual and personalised.

What you train, in practice

A functional breathing session looks more like a workout than a meditation: you measure your starting point (the method uses a simple breath test), you learn the exercises, seated, walking, in sport, and you build a progression. Over time, practitioners typically report a calmer everyday breath, better management of perceived stress, quieter sleep with nasal breathing at night, and, for athletes, a breathing economy that helps performance. These are areas of wellbeing and training: the method is not a cure, and anyone with respiratory or other health conditions should talk to their doctor first.

Who it is for

Practically everyone, and that is its strength: the athlete who wants efficiency, anyone going through stressful periods and looking for a concrete tool, anyone who sleeps badly and snores with their mouth open, anyone who simply notices they are breathing "uphill". The exercises adapt to your starting point, gentle versions for beginners, intense progressions for athletes, and they need no equipment: the laboratory is your nose.

Breathwork at the masseria

Here, functional breathing is about to find a home: Davide, breath coach and facilitator we work with, works with the Oxygen Advantage method: in the coming months the first one-to-one sessions and small groups will open, in the masseria's vaulted stone hall, with the silence of the Grecìa Salentina countryside as the setting. If you would like a consultation when we start, or simply to be notified, the waiting list is open: those on the list will have priority for the first places.

Three taster exercises (gentle and safe)

  1. The nose check: for one day, every time you notice you are breathing through your mouth, close it and go back to the nose. Just that: awareness.
  2. The long exhale: breathe in calmly through the nose, breathe out through the nose counting to six. Ten breaths like this, whenever you feel tension: it is the nervous system's safety brake.
  3. The silent breath: sit for two minutes and breathe so lightly that nobody next to you could hear you. If you feel a slight hunger for air, you are in the right spot: that is where the breath trains.

The rest is built together, with method and gradual steps. Write to us: the breath is a good place to start.
