Salento with Your Dog: Dog-Friendly Stays & Travel Tips

Anyone who travels with a dog knows: you plan the holiday backwards. First you find a place where your dog is genuinely welcome — not merely "tolerated" — and then you build everything else around it. The good news comes twice over: Salento is a welcoming land for those travelling on four paws, and the masseria is one by choice. Here's the practical guide.

At the masseria: welcome, truly

Let's start at home: at Masseria Montanari dogs are allowed in all our accommodation, no exceptions. All we ask is that you mention it when you make your enquiry, so we can prepare everything properly.

For a dog, the masseria is a little paradise: a big garden to roam, the open countryside right outside for morning and evening walks, no traffic, no lifts, no hotel corridors. And for you, the freedom to enjoy your holiday without guilt: your dog is having just as good a time as you are.

One honest note: farm animals live at the masseria too. For everyone's peace of mind, dogs should be kept on a lead in the shared areas — the countryside is theirs, but with good manners.

The beaches: how it works in Salento

The most frequent question: can I take my dog to the beach? The honest answer is: it depends on where and when.

  • In high season (June to September), free beaches are governed by each town's local ordinances: on many stretches, access for dogs is restricted during the middle of the day. The best solution is the dog-friendly equipped beaches, found on both coasts (designated areas and beach clubs that accept dogs, often with dedicated facilities): it's worth checking and booking ahead.
  • Out of season and in the early morning, it's a completely different story: miles of near-deserted coastline where walking your dog is an absolute pleasure. May, June and September are the golden months in this respect.

Our practical advice: tell us where you'd like to go and what size your dog is, and we'll point you to the most convenient options from the masseria — the rules change from town to town and from year to year, and we know them.

The real enemy: the heat

More than the rules, what matters in summer is climate common sense. The Salento sun is strong and the sand gets scorching hot:

  • beach early in the morning or in the late afternoon, never in the middle of the day;
  • water with you at all times, and breaks in the shade;
  • watch out for burning-hot asphalt on their paw pads during the hot hours;
  • in the middle of the day, the masseria is the perfect alternative: cool stone vaults and a shaded garden.

Things to do together, beyond the sea

Salento with a dog isn't just about the beach — far from it: the inland countryside is their ideal terrain. Walks among the olive trees and dry-stone walls, the villages of the Grecìa Salentina in the evening (almost everywhere, well-behaved dogs are welcome at outdoor café and restaurant tables), the morning markets. It's the kind of holiday where your dog isn't a logistical problem but a travel companion.

The packing checklist

  • Health record booklet and up-to-date parasite treatments (this is the Mediterranean: talk to your vet about leishmaniasis prevention);
  • travel bowls, a long lead for the countryside, plenty of water for the journeys;
  • their favourite spot (blanket or travel bed): in a new place, the smell of home helps;
  • a muzzle with you (rarely needed, but in Italy you're required to carry one);
  • and a recent photo on your phone, just in case.

In short

Salento with your dog works if you choose your base well: outdoor space, countryside within paw's reach, and hosts who welcome dogs gladly. From there, sea in the morning, shade at midday, villages in the evening — for both of you. Write to us to say you're coming with your dog: it's news we're happy to hear, not a problem to manage.
