Dog-Friendly Farmhouse in Salento, Puglia: How It Works at Our Masseria
If you travel with a dog, you know the routine: you find the perfect house, you scroll to the bottom of the page, and you discover that "pets allowed" means "small breeds only", "in one apartment only", "supplement to be agreed", which then becomes a surprise on arrival. That is why we have chosen the opposite path: telling you exactly how things work here, before you book.
Our policy, all out in the open
- Dogs are welcome in all 6 apartments and in the masseria's outdoor spaces, whatever their size, from a dachshund to a Maremma sheepdog.
- The supplement is €20 per dog, per stay, not per night. A week or a weekend, the figure does not change.
- We only ask you to mention your dog when you enquire, so we can prepare the most suitable apartment (for an older dog, for example, one without steps works best).
- In the garden and the courtyard, keep an eye on your dog just as you would at home: we are in open countryside, and there is no shortage of interesting smells to chase.
Why a masseria is the right format for dog owners
Think of what is NOT here: hotel corridors where you pass other guests on a short leash, lifts, carpets, neighbours behind a thin wall. Every apartment has its own independent entrance at ground level: you open the door and you are already outside, in the big garden and then in the countryside of the Grecìa Salentina. The morning walk starts from home: olive groves, dry-stone walls and little white lanes where in an hour you meet more lizards than cars. For your dog this is not a holiday: it is a promotion.
The sea with your dog: where to go
From the masseria you can reach the beaches of the Otranto coast in 20 to 30 minutes, along with several beaches that accept dogs, both free stretches and equipped lidos. The rules change from lido to lido and from season to season (in high season many municipalities restrict the hours), which is why we have collected them all, with periods, rules and tips, in our guide to Salento with your dog. The general principle: June and September are the months when the sea with a dog is easiest; in July and August, aim for early morning and late afternoon.
Season by season: advice from the people who live here
- Summer: the middle of the day is scorching for dogs too. Here you live like the locals do: a walk at dawn, rest in the shade through the hot hours (water and shade are never lacking in the garden), a second outing at sunset. At the beach, a parasol for your dog as well, and watch out for burning sand on their paws.
- Spring and autumn: the golden seasons for a holiday with your dog in Salento. Perfect temperatures for walking, half-empty beaches to run on, and the countryside at its best. If you can choose your dates, choose these.
- Winter: the masseria is open all year round, and the countryside in winter, with its low light and slow rhythms, is an underrated pleasure, for dogs more than for anyone.
The questions we always get
Can we leave the dog in the apartment for a visit to Lecce? Yes, if your dog is comfortable alone: everyone knows their own. For longer days out, let us know: we can point you to places where dogs are genuinely welcome (in Salento there are more of them than you might think). Is there a vet nearby? There are veterinary clinics in the area reachable in a few minutes by car: on arrival we leave you the useful contacts. Can we bring two dogs? Yes: the supplement is per dog, and space is not a problem.
