Where to stay in Melpignano and nearby: a practical guide
Melpignano is a town of around two thousand inhabitants that for one night a year becomes the musical centre of Italy: the Concertone of the Notte della Taranta brings hundreds of thousands of people to the square in front of the former Augustinian convent. And here lies the problem for anyone looking for a room: a town this small inevitably has very few sleeping places, and on the big dates they vanish months in advance. The good news is that the problem is badly framed: in the Grecìa Salentina, distances simply do not exist.
The ten-minute rule
Melpignano sits at the heart of the Grecìa Salentina, Salento's cultural island of Greek origin, surrounded by towns a handful of kilometres away: Corigliano d'Otranto with its castle, Castrignano de' Greci, Zollino, Martano, Carpignano Salentino, Cursi, Maglie. By car you go from one centre to the next in five to ten minutes, on country roads where traffic is an abstract concept. Searching for a place "in Melpignano" is a limit you do not need: it pays to search around Melpignano, where the choice is wider, the prices more honest, and the countryside gives you silence and space that the town centre cannot.
Sleeping in a masseria, ten minutes from the stage
Our Masseria Montanari is in Carpignano Salentino, about ten minutes by car from Melpignano: a 1700s farmhouse with 6 independent apartments, up to 16 sleeping places, private kitchens and a large garden. For anyone coming for the Concertone the advantage is practical: you park at the masseria without hunting for a spot in the chaos, you reach the concert, you come back at your own pace whenever you like, and the next day, while Melpignano takes down the stage, breakfast is in the garden in the quiet of the countryside. For groups of friends coming for the Taranta there is the option of renting the whole property, all to yourselves: the party carries on at home, with no closing time.
Coming for the Taranta? The late-August dates start going months in advance, and the area's small properties fill up first: ask about availability now.
When to book (the real timelines)
- For the Concertone (late August): as soon as the official dates come out, usually in spring. By June the area is already almost full; at the last minute you will only find places far away.
- For the travelling festival (the stops in the villages, in the two weeks before the Concertone): a little more margin, but the weekends go fast.
- Off season: no rush at all, and noticeably lower prices.
Melpignano beyond the Taranta
Reducing Melpignano to that one August night does it an injustice: the sixteenth-century porticoed square is among the most beautiful in Salento, the Augustinian convent is worth the visit even without a stage, and the town is a perfect base for the Grecìa: the villages where griko is still spoken, the Lecce-stone quarries of Cursi, the baroque of Galatina with the frescoes of Santa Caterina. From here you can reach Otranto (20 minutes), Lecce (25), the beaches of the Alimini lakes and the menhirs and dolmens of the area in a day. In autumn and spring prices drop and the Grecìa gives its best: slow living, village bakeries, countryside full of scent.
In practice
- A car is essential: from here everything is 10 to 30 minutes away, but public transport in the countryside is rare.
- Groups and extended families: look for properties with several apartments close together, which is exactly the masseria's format, so you stay together without being on top of each other.
- The night of the Concertone: expect traffic and closed roads around Melpignano; those sleeping in the nearby towns arrive and leave far more relaxed than those hunting for a spot in town.
