Easter and Easter Monday at a Masseria in Puglia: The Barbecue Tradition
In Salento, Easter Monday is not a day trip: it is a ritual with fire. On the Monday after Easter, Salento families load the car with meat, vegetables and baking trays and go "to do the fornello", the traditional open-air barbecue that runs from midday to sunset, with the generations mingling around the embers. It is the most convivial celebration of the year, and the masseria format fits it like a glove: here is how to live it here.
Easter Monday with the fornello: how it works with us
At Masseria Montanari, Easter Monday is done the way tradition demands, but without the lottery of finding a free spot in the pine woods:
- the wood-fired barbecue and the oven ready from the morning: the embers are yours, and the family's baking trays are welcome;
- the garden for the long table, the children's games and the afternoon rest in the shade;
- the vaulted hall (55 sqm, up to 35 seated, climate-controlled) as plan B if the April weather turns capricious, and in April it does: an advantage the pine woods cannot offer;
- free choice of catering and kitchens at your disposal: from your trusted butcher's meat to the market's vegetables, you run the shopping;
- exclusive use: one group only, no beach-club loudspeakers, no unknown neighbours at the next table.
Easter: the lunch, the rites, the whole weekend
The Salento Easter begins before the Monday: Holy Week fills the villages with rites and processions, the bakeries turn out the traditional sweets, the almond-paste lamb, the cuddhure (traditional Easter breads decorated with eggs), and on Sunday the family lunch is an institution. The format we recommend is the long weekend: arrive on Friday or Saturday, spend Easter with lunch in the vaulted hall or the garden, and let Easter Monday with the fornello close in glory. The numbers, out in the open
The whole masseria runs from 500 to 800 € per day depending on season and length of stay: for an Easter weekend with 14-16 people, the cost per head stays below that of two restaurant lunches, with the house, the garden and the embers included. And the food shopping, done in the village bakeries and butcher shops, is half the fun.

Do we bring the fornello ourselves? No: the wood-fired barbecue and the oven are already here. You bring the meat and the company. What if it rains? The vaulted hall keeps the whole table under cover and warm: the party is not cancelled, it just moves ten metres. When should we book?
